Most of Week 2 was used to solidify and
build upon the ideas generated during Week 1. Initially, the plan was to
construct a zombie that would hold a Jack-in-the-Box (JITB); "Jack"
would emerge from the box and greet the visitors with a prerecorded
message. However, a refined version of this idea was created during Week
2. Instead of a zombie holding a Jack-in-the-Box, a headless Jack
Skellington would hold a JITB containing his head. This head would
slowly raise itself out of the box and greet visitors. Additionally, it
was decided that the eyes should light up, so that the head would
resemble a Jack-O'-Lantern. The inspiration for this idea came from the
movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, in which Jack Skellington
is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town. By creating an animatronic
creature that resembles the pumpkin king, children will see a familiar
and welcoming character prior to entering the maze, which will make the
maze seem less imposing.
In addition to finalizing the
focus of the project, the materials needed to complete said project were
determined. PVC pipe will provide the framework for the body and a suit
found on Target's website will clothe this figure. Instead of using
solely an Arduino, a Raspberry Pi that contains an Arduino will be used
in tandem with DC motors to control the motion of the JITB. LED lights
will illuminate the eyes of Jack and wood will be used both for the base
of the body and to construct a box for the head. Because the creature
will resemble Jack Skellington, it will not need to have eyelids, which
eliminates the need for a dedicated blinking apparatus. If we want to
further animate the eyes, Raspberry Pi can be programed to make the LEDs
flicker.
To expedite the prototyping phase of the project, groups were formed to allow progress to be made on multiple aspects of the project simultaneously. Tenzin and George will focus on programming the Raspberry Pi, Tao will design a CAD model of the device required to raise the head out of the box, Patrick will begin construction of Jack's body, and Josh will design a CAD model of the skull.
